Civil War Era Antique Bowie Knife By Barnes Sheffield

Description. This is a neat knife, adn although it is not large (the spear-point blade is 4 & 7/8 long) it has plenty of character. There is a 3 line stamping on the obverse flat that reads edward / barnes & sons / sheffield. nI addition, although it has no military meaning, u s is stamped on the obverse ricasso. Both sides fo the german silver guard are the head of a moose or an elk, but there is no mistaking the wolf's head pommel caps on both sides of the handle.

We think that the deeply checkered scales (held in place by 3 pins) are made of horn, but they might be some other material. The edge of the heavy full tang is visible all around the handle, with a liner (perhaps german silver) between the tang and scales. Although it is obvious that the blade ahs seen use and sharpening, there is nice patina with just a few minute pits. We got it with an unrelated later leather sheath that fits it quite well in spite of the fact thta it was made for a clipped point knife. This isn't the best bowie we've offered on ebay, but with the arre wolf's head pommel it is perhaps the most charming.
